Cardigan refers to a type of sweater that has buttons on the front.. Cardigan was originally a short military Jacket named after James Thomas Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan, a British military commander and was worn by the British army during the Crimean war. Since then and now Cardigan style is often applied to sweaters or pullovers buttoned on the front and ribbed at the waist and at the wrists.
