Pattens refers to the thick soled Shoe or Clog raised on a heel, common in the Middle Ages. Sometimes made out of wood and worn over slippers. Pattens is an overshoes with a raised so le on an iron ring that is meant to protect the shoes from water, uneven ground and mud damage. Pattens was worn from the 18th century into the early 20th century.
