Chatoyancy is the jewelry term referring to the "cat's-eye effect" seen in some stones when cut in the cabochon style.

Chatoyancy appears as a single beam of light through a gem stone. The effect is caused by reflection across the surface, which is why the light beam will move as the stone does. Stones commonly seen with chatoyancy include tiger's eye, chrysoberyl, and tourmaline.
