Quilting refers to a fabric construction in which a layer of fill -usually down, cotton or batting is sandwiched in-between two other fabrics, usually by stitching the layers toget her in crisscross lines. Often used in outerwear and sleepwear, quilting adds warmth for cozy comfort. It an also be used to provide bulk.
Quilted materials (jackets, bags, bedsheets, etc) have three (3) layers (top, padding and lining) of fabric used to give a puffy look. The layers are held together with a variety of quilt-design stitching.
