Escada refers to an international luxury fashion group specialising in women's designer fashion. Set up in 1976, the company currently has 201 own shops and 303 franchise shops/corner s in more than 60 countries. Fragrances, eyewear, childrenswear and jewellery from licensed partners are also sold under the Escada brand.

American-born Wolfgang and his Swedish-born wife Margaretha Ley founded their design house in Munich in 1976, naming it Escada after a racehorse they won money betting on. They began as a sportswear designer, and in the early 1980s expanded broadly in womenswear, becoming especially well-known for their knitwear, as well as opening stores in the United States and Asia.

Escada's showy yet elegantly chic designs made the company one of the most prominent design houses of the 1980s, and it made newspaper headlines around the world when the company became publicly traded in 1986 . Margaretha Ley was the Chief Designer until she died in 1992. In 1995, Todd Oldham was brought in as a Creative Consultant, and he successfully led expansions of several of their lines.

Damiano Biella, formerly of Carolina Herrera and Valentino also became a Creative Director of the firm. Wolfgang Ley retired as CEO of the Escada group in 2006, but still consults for the firm.

In August 2009, Fashion House Escada files for insolvency as restructuring fails. It was a a move that was expected after the company's last-ditch bid to restructure its finances failed to find favour with shareholders.
